Game 84: History

hahaha, agreed, when people are around you have to keep them on a hook.

Yeah. I have the tendency to play within 3 minutes on here though because I'm trying to take advantage of your activity, lol. These games move so slowly otherwise!

actually, you're completely right. after our first game I was going with a "D" first strategy. Also, I was watching a Josh Waitzkin annotated game last night, and he was stressing not pushing the attack until you are sure you have the math on your side. He was saying that having an advantage is good, but that is when you want to be even more careful as to not give it away, and wait until the "math" is clearly in your advantage to attack.

One of these days we'll be able to work out a good time for us all to get together at the university, lol.

Agreed. I love five minute games for that. Against good players anyways. Against Justin I often give myself the proverbial five minute clock but him unlimited time. Which doesn't accomplish much because I get so much time to analyze, lol.

true, but I still think it is good training. I like playing 5 minute games, especially with good players, because even though I might not know what my initial mistake is, the next time i see the board developing the same way it somewhat prepares me.

Back when I used to play blitz chess during physics class, I was against opponents who had no concept of what a good or bad open was... and neither did I. So my superior ability to see errors made me win most of those games.

Depends on the skill level of the game. The problem for us both with blitz chess is that there are still huge gaps in our opening theory, which leads to some truly bizzare board positions. We're both FAIRLY good at quick analysis but we both miss some (in retrospect) fairly obvious moves. Makes any game between us that is played quickly decided by who screws up the most, lol.

nah, I think blitz chess can be fine as long as you know when to put on the brakes. I think if i take your c2 pawn instead of the rook, I might have been able to win my piece back plus your king would have been in the open.

Ya know even though I was almost ready to give up I wasn't in THAT bad of a position. I just THOUGHT I saw checkmate and it made me despair. :P
Mike
4911 days ago
lol, and now everything is pointing towards my king.
Devin

While I typed my previous comment before seeing yours... LOLOLOL reiterates my point. We're both being very "wtf" tonight.
Devin
4911 days ago
So I strike my previous comment. Neither of us should play blitz chess, lol.
Mike
4911 days ago
for some reason i thought I could bring my rook down to D1.
Devin

In your defense, I ALMOST made another move then went "HOOOO SHIT!"
Mike
4911 days ago
i knew i should have gone for the pawn.
Mike
4911 days ago
see what happens, as i have no idea at this point.
Mike
4911 days ago
okay lets do a couple more.
Devin
4911 days ago
I'll try. :P
Mike
4911 days ago
night man; you can try to figure out a counter, as i haven't decided if i will take your rook yet
Devin
4911 days ago
But I suck at giving up. :P
Devin
4911 days ago
I sorta want to concede defeat and let you checkmate me right here, lol.
Devin
4911 days ago
Mostly comes down to I didn't notice, somehow, that your bishop was undefended. And that makes it a lot more complicated for you to checkmate me. Though still quite doable.
Mike
4911 days ago
but i am definitely going to damage you here.
Mike
4911 days ago
yea, your white bishop is stopping me.
Devin
4911 days ago
Although getting out of it will require me to sacrafice enough that I'll be screwed anyways, I think.
Mike
4911 days ago
okay lets leave it until tomorrow...maybe im too tired to see it.
Devin
4911 days ago
Nevermind. I MIGHT be able to get out of it. Well I'll wait for your move, lol.
Mike
4911 days ago
yes, but now i can't move till i find it.
Devin
4911 days ago
Ah. Well if you don't know how to checkmate me right now, I won't tell you, ahahaha. It's patently obvious to me right now but if you can't see it and miss it, I'll tell you after it's no longer a threat.
