That explains it. I guess we have been talking about it a lot but did not use that name. The last time it was mentioned was Game 125, not quite the same thing in that case but the comment does make sense now.

There ARE a few other reasons to do it but... in general, unless you expect at LEAST a FREE (not pawn for, but completely free) bishop/knight or better piece out of it, DON'T DO IT. And even then... make sure you are in the aggressor's position.

well, f2 and f7 are the kings weakside squares, as they are only guarded by the king, so never move that pawn unless you have already reinforced that square.

I see. You have mentioned kings weakside before, but I don't think it was quite the same as this. Is that an entire class of tactics?

ahh, the kings weakside trap. I've been wanting to show this combination to Nick for a while....so here it is nick, notice how my queen pinned his h file pawn.
